P.R.I.D.E. & P.O.W.E.R. in APS
Efforts are underway across the district to change school building culture. Teachers, support staff and administrators are working together to develop Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) as part of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
PBIS focuses on introducing, modeling and reinforcing positive behavior as an integral part of every student's school experience. Often, we assume students know all the rules, routines and procedures in school, but often they do not understand what positive behaviors look like in actual practice. The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to create a school culture where appropriate behavior is the norm.
Alpena's elementary schools have been working with a similar philosophy for several years. See a progress report on district-wide efforts here. Now, our junior high and high schools are being trained and working together to develop their own unique climate.
At TBJH, their system is called "P.R.I.D.E." which stands for Personal responsibility, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Effort. AHS's system is "P.O.W.E.R." which represents Purpose, Optimism, Willpower, Excellence, and Respect. A progress report for AHS and TBJH is linked here.
Building leadership teams involve staff members and support from the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District. These teams are learning to use data effectively to address both academic and behavior concerns to make POWER and PRIDE part of our secondary experience for students.
